We start the week by viewing Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh, 1993). We will finish the movie before getting into other projects. Watching this movie is part of our curriculum so if you are not in class you must watch some version of the movie outside of class or, if you cannot, watch it in my room at lunch or after school. It's OK if you have an appointment elsewhere on campus during class; you just need to watch the movie with me at lunch and write a summary of the part you missed.
When the movie is complete we will take a quiz on drama terms. I will give you 10 definitions and you will provide the word defined. No word bank. Also on this quiz I will give you 5-10 quotes from Much Ado: You will provide who is speaking, who is spoken two and a brief description of context. For two of the quotes (you pick) you will explain how it contributes to the meaning of the play.
Examples:
"Kill Claudio"
Beatrice to Benedict, after they have said I love you because Claudio disgraced Hero at the wedding.
"He was wont to speak plain and to the purpose, like an honest man and a soldier; and now is he turned orthography; his words are a very fantastical banquet, just so many strange dishes."
Benedick to himself in the garden as he reflects on Claudio falling in love.
If you chose this one to discuss meaning, you might write:
This quote reveals the value Benedick places on masculine virtues and his belief that love produces dishonesty. A soldier--the ultimate man's man-- is plain spoken and honest. Male friendship, therefore, is build on honesty. Romance, on the other hand, causes a man to speak in a manner "fantastical" and "strange." The play expresses the anxiety that men feel about women interfering with same-sex friendship.
