Monday 8/29. Read Malcolm X on Learning to read in 50 essays.
Discuss X's essay. Begin work on reading essay. For this essay you will write about one of the authors we have read and your own experiences to to produce a short essay on the value of reading. See handout.
We will work on the essay in class over the week, each day going over a different aspect of writing. You must have a complete thesis and introduction at start of class on Friday.
Outside reading. You have until 9/12 to select a nonfiction book written for adults. You will read the book in and out of class over the next month. You will annotate the book either by writing in the margins and highlighting or by using Post-it notes. You will also complete a few pages of notes in your class notebook. You can find the assignment here.
9.5 This week we will continue working on the essay on reading. I will looking for a clear thesis, your ability to structure an argument and your ability to weave in evidence--specifically a couple of quotations from the reading. This essay is meant to introduce you to the sorts of essays we will write in this class, so I will reward earnest effort.
Wednesday we begin working on the college essay. The ERWC unit is "What's Next" You have received the readings. Slide show is linked on class resources and here. You already have the readings. Below is the student version of the unit with readings.
Essay is due printing out on Thursday for peer editing.
Final draft is due Friday.
