Overview this week you will begin the unit of "The Rhetoric of the Op Ed." An op-ed is an opinion piece that appears in a newspaper (or on line news site). The name derives from the traditional place in the paper of the op-ed: on the page opposite the editorial page. (Editorials, by the way, are also opinion pieces, but they express the collective view of the newspaper publisher or editorial board.) In this unit you will read op-eds on different sides of the animal rights debate. You will study the rhetorical triangle and analyze how writers use appeals to ethos, logos and pathos to persuade their audiences. You will also read and analyze op-eds on your own. In the end you will write your own op-ed. This will be an mini-essay of about 800 words that address a contemporary issue that you have researched (logos) and that you can speak to with some authority (ethos). You'll be most effective if you also touch your readers' emotions (pathos).
