Final Deadline is this week. As we close pages please keep a few things in mind:
YEARBOOK COPY
Sports:
Always use PAST TENSE in copy. Even the spring season will be over when the book comes out. You can say:
“Bill was leading the team in hits when the Tesoro went to press in April.”
Scores are written in numerals, such as “In a 7-6 game …. “ Season records are written in numerals. “The basketball team finished 12-8 after dropping its final game.”
The section we play in is Sacramento-San Joaquin, which can be shortened in all references as Sac-Joaquin.
Do not use an apostrophe with girls team or boys team.
Do not cheerlead or editorialize (offer opinion).
If you feel the need to praise the team, quote someone who will do it for you.
Names:
It's full name on first reference and first name only on second reference. CHECK NAMES WITH THE NAME CHECK FUNCTION UNDER THE EDIT TAB AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
QUOTES
Only quote that which is quote worthy. Do not include quotes like: "We had fun," she said. "The team bonded like a family," Sam said.
Always use SAID.
Commas go inside the quotation marks. If it is a two-sentence quote the attribution goes in the middle.
"The worst part of the season was losing to El Camino on a buzzer beater," Jeff said. "But the best moment was going into their gym and beating them on a buzzer beater."
OPINION:
In journalism, we call inserting opinion as editorializing. DON'T DO IT. Do not wish anyone luck or say how great they are. Instead, show us. People you quote can offer opinions.
CAPTIONS:
Captions are normally two sentence. The first sentence is present tense. It tells what is happening in the photo without stating the obvious. The second sentence provides background detail that you cannot get from the picture. This is past tense. It could be a quote or a statistic or other background.
