1. you can form a thesis: What is revealed by the story?
2. that you can organize two short body paragraphs in support of your thesis (topic sentence, transitions)
3. that you can weave in quotations (one or two per paragraph)
4. that you can use MLA formatting (document style and citation)
5. that you can make a work cited list
So while I care about your opinion and style of writing, your grade will be weighted heavily on the more technical matters. Peer edit on Friday. Post to turnitin on Monday by 10 p.m.
For Monday:
Read: Psalms: 23, 104, 137.
Journal due: 1. 200+ words. Analysis of One Psalm. You will get at theme but pay attention to how the poem works (note especially use of parallel structure, antithesis, mood, shifts), and if you go outside the poem that has to be in addition to your analysis. (Note journals are always one page unless noted. I count 200 words as one page for this as that is on average about what people handwrite on a page)
Read Kafka's parable of the law. Short journal (100 words). What is the meaning of Kafka's parable.
Test on Literary terms for drama.
Homework: Read DFW essay = Buddhist parables.
For Tuesday:
Before class: Read Kafka's Mouse fable at the start of David Foster Wallace's essay. Write one half page on the meaning of the mouse parable. Then read the rest of the essay. Write one half page on something that strikes you about DFW's essay.
Conclude Parables. Get Oedipus book. Homework: Read Oedipus first 20 pages of Oedipus for Friday. Finish reading outside class for next Monday
Homework: Read the Plato: Allegory of the Cave, Apology
Wednesday: Discuss Allegory of the Cave, Apology. Homework Read Pericles funeral oration. Journal: Note how Pericles uses rhetoric to establish purpose.
For Thursday: Test on Greek terms. Discuss Pericles.
Friday: Greek Theater...Begin Oedipus.
