For Monday read A Modest Proposal. Read this on line. This version is annotated to explain some obscure references. You can also search for any full length version. If you need help with comprehension go to a study guide after reading (then go back and read key passages with your new understanding.) Take notes on your reading. Either print it out and mark it up, copy it into a google doc and add comments or take good Cornell notes. These are the questions (borrowed from Lincoln Park HS) that we will consider as we discuss this. While you don't have to write out answers to the questions, per se, you should be know before you walk in the door: specific instances of irony; uses of logos, pathos and ethos; uses of overstatement and hyperbole; and, especially, links between language and tone in several places.
